USS West Virginia (BB-48) 1942 Photo Pearl Harbor Hawaii 8×10 Original Caption: USS West Virginia (BB-48) Battleship with masts removed being refitted after attack on Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii. On the morning of December 7, 1941, the USS West Virginia was anchored at Battleship Row when Japan launched its infamous attack on Pearl Harbor, thrusting the United States into World War II. Despite sustaining severe damage from enemy torpedoes, the vessel foundered in shallow waters. However, through extensive efforts spanning from 1943 to mid-1944, she was salvaged and underwent substantial reconstruction. Rejoining the fleet just in time for the Philippines Campaign, the West Virginia played a pivotal role in the Battle of Surigao Strait on October 24–25. Notably, she utilized radar technology to target Japanese forces amidst the darkness, marking a historic moment as one of the last engagements between battleships.
